UMPA Diabetes Care IT Initiative Earns Recognition
This past January, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) recognized University Medical Practice Associates’ (UMPA’s) use of healthcare information technology in its diabetes care efforts. UMPA, along with two other medical practices in the United States, was selected in the organization’s Stories of Success! case study program.
As the outpatient clinical practice of the Department of Medicine at St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals, UMPA provides primary and subspecialty care in clinics throughout New York City.
The case that gained UMPA acknowledgement concerned its role in delivering diabetes care for high-risk populations in Harlem and the Upper West Side. To enhance its operations, UMPA successfully employed eClinicalWorks information systems, including an electronic medical record (EMR) system and analytical tools.
According to Edwin Young, MD, an UMPA primary care physician who has overseen the eClinicalWorks systems implementation, the IT initiative significantly improved the practice’s data collection, communication and care coordination. “Using these IT tools, we were able to gain better insight into these high-risk patients and help them achieve better management of their diabetes,” said Dr. Young.
HIMSS is a nonprofit organization that promotes the best use of healthcare IT and management systems. It sponsors the Stories of Success! program along with several other nonprofit groups, including the American Society for Quality, the National Committee for Quality Assurance and the National Patient Safety Foundation.
